The 4-Way Test

OF THE THINGS we think, say or do:

  • 1. Is it the TRUTH?
  • 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  • 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  • 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Serving the Community

A few years ago I asked the students in my school to tell me what was their favorite thing about living in Clearlake. I expected to hear that it was the lake, or the animals, or the beautiful landscape, but overwhelmingly the students agreed that it was that “in Clearlake, we help out our own.” This comment inspired me to write some music and have the students write the verses and chorus to the song.  The song has the chorus and 3 of the verses they wrote. The fourth verse about Rotary, I wrote because it is my favorite part of living in our community. I truly enjoy the opportunity we are given to serve.

We Help Out Our Own

Strolling through the streets of our town

The clean air and beauty surrounds

What’s hidden from view may be the best part

There’s so many people giving their hearts

If there’s one thing we’ve learned

Deeds speak louder than words

In Clearlake we help out our own

Life has been hard for some of us

Got no silver spoons, we ride the bus

Many a time, we felt all alone

Then a guardian angel gave us a home

Ran out of gas, the house has no heat

Little children with no shoes on their feet

The people next door know how to share

If it’s second hand, we really don’t care

There’s a group of leaders who joined Rotary

Because they wanted to serve their community

And help their neighbors who find themselves in need

Their hearts filled with love for doing the deeds
